Essay Tips > FILE FORMAT / CONVERSION PROBLEMS
It happens to us all sometimes - we write part of our essay on one computer, take it to another to print, and find that we can't open the damn file!
Perhaps you wrote your essay in MS Word, saved it as .doc or .docx, and now you can't open it on a Mac?
Or maybe you wrote it on the latest version of Word, and now you need to open it in a version that's a few years old?
Don't panic - there's an easy solution! The online file conversion site Zamzar allows you to convert one type of file to another within minutes. Much easier than rushing home to re-save the essay you need to print out at college!
This isn't an advert for Zamzar, it's just a recommendation we're making based on our own experiences. Sometimes customers e-mail us attachments in formats we've never even heard of (and we've heard of most of them!), but sites like Zamzar let us convert the file to make sure we can read it.
If that's still not solving your problem, don't forget that saving a text file as a Rich Text Format (RTF) file, i.e. with a .rtf extension, should allow it to be read by any word processor on any computer!
Of course, the problem with any kind of file conversion is that you risk losing the formatting, so there's probably going to be some work left for you to do. But at least it's easier than rushing home on the bus when your deadline's only an hour away!
This guide to file conversion is part of the Essay Tips section of our website, offering articles on every aspect of essay writing. Don't miss our sample essay page, with sample work covering every subject from Accountancy to Zoology!
